My problem has always been the definition of a child. Pre-pubescent is a child. Once a girl has had her period, nature is saying that she is now a woman. Soceity can make all the rules it wants. When you read threads of when people first indulged in any meaningful sexual activity the age s are from 15 onwards. I, myself, cannot see a problem with people who wish to start experimenting at that age.

an 8 year old girl got pregnant. and I've known some girls that had their periods at age 10. but they still don't look developed in other ways. I had my period at 14, but I started getting breasts years before.

I was brought up in a society that said 14 was a legal age for sexual intercourse.
In New Zealand it is 16. In United Staes its 18?
Sexual maturity, for me, should be taught to children as oon as they hit puberty.
I know that at 13 I was sexually curious and then active, it could be called just fumbling along as sex education was frowned on at schools.
How much better would it be to teach and educate instead of burying our heads in the sand?

Age laws are not in place because young girls bodies are incapable of having sex, but for emotional and Economic reasons!

I am 57, and do not take meds for erectile problems,yet. I am the product of a series of molestation at a young age,I have not done it, but one of the other boys that was molested by this same man is now a registered sex offender, The man that did the molesting is now dead from aids, but I wonder how many other people he molested and how they turned out. The average age for first time sex in Canada is 16. That would make the average Canadian a sex offender in the US. Doesn't that seem screwed up? Should we make them register at the border?

At what age are women emotionally ready for sex? I'd say look at the divorce statistics for proof that even 30 year old women aren't ready. Maybe they're never emotionally ready.

I think the legal standard should be closer to or at puberty, with someone of a similar age. Sexual relationships at that age may be mistakes, but they shouldn't be federal life-ruining crimes.

These 12 yr olds getting married is mostly in 3rd world county's where they have little money or birth control. The parents are unloading there burden to some horny man in hopes there daughter will have a better life and they can free up some money to buy food for their 6 other children.

In the days of the family farm where people were more isolated and the world population was small, the more children you had the better! But those days are gone and people live twice as long, there is no need for girls to have sex just because they menstruate.

It would be a very big deal if he was sexually exploiting her and as the law in New Zealand is 16, yes he would be a sexual offender but, if for some reason my daughter wanted to have sex with a 40 year old man, while I would be angry and disappointed , I don,t see that I could do much about it.

Around 16, you should be able to sleep with someone even if it's a mistake.

I've never heard of 12 year olds being charged for having sex with someone of similar age, except in extreme circumstaces.

I have to say something about this issue. My sister was molested by a predator half a block from our home when she was young. She was about 12 or 13 at the time. It traumatized her pretty bad.

I met a guy that was convicted by a military trial of molesting his daughter for many years. About three weeks after his conviction, he sent me a letter with the address of his 16 year old daughter. I think he wanted me to continue his work.

Years ago, I met another man who confessed that he was used by his family for pornography when he was just around 10. I lost track of him over the course of a few years. I saw a series of news articles on the national news about a manhunt for a missing boy. The father and his lover were found dead of an apparent suicide pact. They didn't find him. A local TV station did a story about finding a body of a young boy in a lake in a neighboring lake. I thought how tragic this all is until they showed the photo of the missing father and son. It was this man that I knew. I had met the son briefly before at a potluck.

And lastly, I had a friend who told me the most heinous crime of gang rape that someone had done to him. He went into detail as best as he could remember. It truly horrified me. This monster who perpetrated the crime may have purposely given my friend AIDS.

Why am I bringing this all up? These are true cases that have happen to people I have known. I have been exposed to some pretty dark stuff in my life. Some people don't make it out alive after being the victim of such crimes. I had to get this off my chest. It has been eating a hole in my brain the last few days. Sorry to have gone on as long as I have.

 

A friend of mine and my girlfriend, who were our roommates for a year, was molested by her uncle and other family members, can't remember the exact details.

She now works for the Youth Emergency Shelter, helping kids that come from similar backgrounds.

I went to a charity lunch where she and other members spoke about their stories and such. Her boss was apparently molested for years by male family members, including her 3 brothers.

These people have the intelligence to not continue the cycle of abuse, they know what it's like to have their lives tainted because some fucking weirdo can't control themselves.
